ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ORAL HYGIENE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES AND SIMPLIFIED ORAL HYGIENE INDEX (OHI-S) STATUS AMONG PATIENTS WITH DIABETES MELLITUS

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that may increase the risk of oral and dental health problems, highlighting the importance of appropriate oral hygiene maintenance practices in preserving oral health. This study aimed to determine the association between oral hygiene maintenance practices and Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S) status among patients with diabetes mellitus in Meunasah Bie Village, Meurah Dua Subdistrict, Pidie Jaya Regency, Indonesia. An observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 53 respondents selected using total sampling. Data on oral hygiene maintenance practices were collected using a structured questionnaire, while OHI-S status was assessed through clinical examination using the Greene and Vermillion index. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The findings showed that 69.8% of respondents had moderate oral hygiene maintenance practices, while 75.4% had poor OHI-S status. Bivariate analysis demonstrated a statistically significant association between oral hygiene maintenance practices and OHI-S status (p = 0.005). In conclusion, oral hygiene maintenance practices were significantly associated with OHI-S status among patients with diabetes mellitus. Patients with diabetes mellitus should be encouraged to improve their oral hygiene practices, while healthcare providers should strengthen oral health education and promote appropriate oral hygiene behaviours as an integral component of diabetes management
